Warner Brothers Airs Their Dirty Laundry on Charlie Sheen - * * Gripping! **

 

March 7, 2011 |  3:04 pm   In its letter dismissing Charlie Sheen from the CBS show "Two and a Half Men," lawyers for Warner Bros. dumped the company's whole basket of dirty laundry on the actor out.   Sheen "has been engaged in dangerously self-destructive conduct and appears to be very ill," the letter from the firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP to attorney Marty Singer said. Sheen's condition "undermined the production in numerous and significant ways" and ultimately left Warner Bros., the producers of the hit sitcom, no choice but to pull the plug on the show and subsequently on himself.    "Warner Bros. would not, could not, and should not attempt to continue `business as usual' while Mr. Sheen destroys himself as the world watches," the letter said.   Sheen's camp leaked the letter to Singer to the gossip site TMZ, and its contents were subsequently confirmed by people familiar with the matter. Sheen told the site that his firing was good news.   The letter firing Sheen is the latest back-and-forth between the actor and Warner Bros., CBS and Chuck Lorre, the co-creator and executive producer of "Two and a Half Men." Production on the show was suspended for four episodes in January so Sheen could go to a rehabilitation facility after a series of incidents that included hospital trips and run-ins with the law. Sheen opted to be treated at home and soon declared himself ready to return to work.   Warner Bros., CBS and Lorre weren't buying Sheen's miracle cure and after the actor went on a media tour trashing all three, production for the entire season was suspended.   Sheen and his legal team have argued that Warner Bros. is in breach of his contract for ending production of this season, but the lawyers for Warner Bros. counter that it is the actor who has overstepped his bounds, not the studio.   Sheen's "self-destructive conduct resulted in his hospitalization, his inability to work at all for a period and the rapid erosion of the cooperative and creative process necessary to produce the show," the studio's lawyers said. Sheen is described as missing rehersals and not being prepared for filming. The letter goes on to say that Sheen's admitted drug use and "furnishing of cocaine" to others puts him in violation of his contract. "There is ample evidence supporting Warner Bros. reasonable good faith opinion that Mr. Sheen has committed felony offenses involving moral turpitude ... that have interfered with his ability to fully and completely render all material services required" under his contract.   Interestingly, the letter acknowledges that Warner Bros., CBS and Lorre were previously willing to overlook Sheen's various issues with the law and substance abuse to keep the show going.   "While it was not anywhere close to an ideal working situation, Warner Bros. and CBS as well as Mr. Lorre continued to make accommodations for the off-camera (yet very public) aspects of Mr. Sheen's life," the letter said, adding "at each step, Warner Bros. "After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men' effective immediately," program makers Warner Bros. Television said in a statement. Sheen, 45, is the highest-paid actor on U.S television and "Two and A Half Men" is the most popular comedy for network CBS which broadcasts the series. But the remainder of the current season was canceled 10 days ago after Sheen called producer and co-creator Chuck Lorre a "clown" and a "stupid, stupid little man." The actor followed up with a week of rambling, sometimes manic, TV and radio interviews boasting that he is "winning" and has "tiger blood", while insisting he is drug-free and sober after a period of rehabilitation in January. Sheen, who had a contract through May 2012, shrugged off Monday's firing with a mixture of nonchalance and jibes. "It is a big day of gladness at the Sober Valley Lodge because now I can take all of the bazillions, never have to look at whatshiscock again and I never have to put on those silly shirts for as long as this warlock exists in the terrestrial dimension," Sheen said in a statement. His lawyers said they planned to sue Warner Bros. Television. A spokesman for Warner Bros. Television said no decision had been made about the future of "Two and A Half Men." The comedy, in which Sheen plays a womanizing bachelor, is a huge generator of advertising revenue for CBS and makes millions in syndication rights for Warner Bros. Television. Warner Bros. and CBS could decide to bring it back for another season, without Sheen. "DANGEROUSLY SELF-DESTRUCTIVE" In an 11-page letter, attorneys for Warner Bros. said Sheen was being fired because in recent months he had been forgetting lines, turning up late or missing rehearsals and made "comments poisoning key working relationships." TV executives believed Sheen's drug and alcohol abuse was also "endangering his life". Despite repeated attempts, including a personal appeal in January by CBS chief executive Les Moonves, Sheen refused to enter a rehab facility for treatment, the letter said. "Let us state the obvious," began the letter, obtained by TMZ.com. "Your client (Sheen) has been engaged in dangerously self-destructive conduct and appears to be very ill." Sheen's long-time publicist quit a week ago and Sheen's fellow cast and crew have been largely silent in the face of his bizarre tirades. But the actor has found a huge popular following. He has attracted a record 2 million-plus Twitter followers in less than a week, and he hosted a live webcast on Saturday that attracted more than 100,000 viewers. The actor was involved in a series of drug and alcohol-related incidents in 2010, and pleaded guilty in August to an assault on his now ex-wife. Production on "Two and A Half Men" was shut down in late January after Sheen was hospitalized following a 36-hour cocaine-fueled party. He agreed to a form of rehab at home, but the Warner Bros. letter said he apparently fired his sobriety coach after just two weeks. Audiences for "Two and a Half Men" have remained strong despite Sheen's rabble rousing. Original episodes attract about 14 million U.S. viewers a week, and some 10 million tune in to watch repeats. Sheen's $5M HBO Deal Claim Shot Down

LOS ANGELES - Undeterred by the shut down of his "Two and A Half Men" TV comedy, actor Charlie Sheen unleashed a new torrent of messages Friday as Hollywood backed away from the increasingly erratic star.

Sheen, on vacation in the Bahamas after a month of "rehab" at his Los Angeles home for alcohol and drug addiction, told TV show "Good Morning America" in a text message he would turn up for work next week despite the fact that Thursday producers pulled the plug on his top-rated CBS comedy for the remainder of the season.

In a separate text message to celebrity website Radaronline.com, Sheen claimed he was in talks for a new program of his own on cable channel HBO that would and him an unheard of $5 million an episode. HBO said there was "no truth to the report."

Sheen, 45, had also been in line to make a third "Major League" baseball movie. But producer James G. Robinson told TMZ.com he would not risk putting Sheen in the film.

"If Charlie doesn't straighten up...I unfortunately can't put him in the movie," said Robinson.

"When an actor doesn't show up for work, you can lose half a million dollars a day paying the 250 other people there for the shoot and the costs for the set," he said.

Sheen claimed Friday he was clean of drink and drugs despite manic, rambling remarks the day before in which he called "Two and A Half Men" co-creator and producer Chuck Lorre a "stupid, stupid little man" in expletive-filled rants.

His comments were the last straw for CBS, which airs "Two and A Half Men" and Warner Bros. Television, which makes the comedy, after a year of Sheen's rabble rousing and a conviction for assaulting his ex-wife.

"I am frightened for the guy," celebrity addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky told website TMZ.com. "It's no joke. He's getting manic...these are bi-polar, manic symptoms."

Production of "Two and a Half Men" -- the most popular comedy on U.S. television and a major cash cow for CBS and Warner Bros Television -- was suspended in January when Sheen was persuaded to seek help after a wild 36-hour party.

"CBS and makers Warner Bros Television may very well decide to call it a day on 'Two and A Half Men' because the hassle is not worth it," said Michael Schneider of TV Guide Magazine.

TV industry sources said a deal was already in place for a 9th season of the comedy,but they declined to speculate whether Sheen would be in it.

Schneider said that with eight seasons of "Men" under their belts, the TV show would continue to do well in syndication for Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter estimated Warner Bros makes up to $250 million in domestic syndication deals on the show.

On Friday, he was compared in U.S. media to fallen actor Mel Gibson and starlet Lindsay Lohan, whose careers have tumbled in recent years as each battled substance abuse.

Schneider said he doubted Sheen's Hollywood career was over, but added; "It will require him really cleaning up and doing a little bit of a mea culpa tour.

"But this is Hollywood. Everyone can reinvent themselves."

In an open letter on Thursday, Sheen urged fans "to walk with me side-by-side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong" and bring the TV show back.

Despite his problems, Sheen has remained popular, so far, and audiences for "Two and a Half Men" have remained strong with about 15 million U.S. viewers a week.

Sheen signed up for two more seasons in May 2010, and got a pay raise that brought his salary to a reported $27.5 million a year for his role as hard-drinking womanizing bachelor Charlie Harper, which in many ways has mirrored his real life.
